At least three people were killed and three more were injured in a shooting Tuesday evening in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Around 5:30 p.m., the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office received calls about an active shooter in the area of Olde Greenwich Drive and Lafayette Boulevard and responded to find multiple people shot.

Three were pronounced deceased on the scene while three others were taken to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

At this time, deputies have not released the conditions, identities or ages of the victims.

Maj. Elizabeth Scott, spokesperson for the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, said during a press conference that the shooter has not been brought into custody, and the shooting may have been committed by more than one person.

“There’s dozens upon dozens of officers out actively looking for suspects and preserving the crime scene,” Scott said.

7News reporter Lianna Golden told WTOP that witnesses on the scene described the gunshots sounding “like a machine gun,” and that they had seen young men walking down the street with “guns in their hands.”

Officials urged people to avoid the area and those near the scene to stay indoors while authorities investigate.

“We will stay out here until the suspects are caught,” Scott said. “This is probably as bad as it could get.”

Following the shooting, Fredericksburg City Public Schools said classes would start two hours late Wednesday “in light of the profound impact this incident has had on members of our school community.”

“This delay will allow us the necessary time to prepare our buildings and staff to welcome students with the care and support they may need during this difficult time,” the statement said.

A two-hour delay has also been implemented at Spotsylvania County Public Schools for Wednesday so adequate support can be put in place for both students and staffers.

“As part of this support, each of our high schools will have additional deputies and presence from the Sheriff’s Office,” reads a SCPS statement.

Authorities are asking for any witnesses to send any video that could help the investigation. Scott added that the department deployed drones above the wooded area around the cul-de-sac, as they search for a likely armed suspect.
