The New England Patriots and New York Giants have one half of their “Monday Night Football” matchup in the books. As these clubs went into the halftime locker room, it’s the Patriots who are knocking on the door of a blowout, owning a 30-7 lead.
While Drake Maye had two passing touchdowns in the half, the story has been the stellar play from New England’s special teams. The unit began the game with a kickoff return that set the offense up at midfield to help the offense notch an opening-drive field goal. Then, Marcus Jones fielded a Giants punt 94 yards for a touchdown to put the Patriots up by double digits in the blink of an eye. It was after that special teams surge when Maye and the offense got rolling, tallying back-to-back touchdown drives, with the second headlined by a 33-yard score from the second-year quarterback to rookie wideout Kyle Williams.
As for the Giants, it was a comedy of errors for the bulk of the first half outside of a 30-yard touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart to Darius Slayton. Most notably, kicker Younghoe Koo botched a field goal attempt midway through the second quarter, as his kicking foot dug into the turf short of the ball, resulting in a sack and turnover on downs.
Can New York clean things up and mount a comeback? Or will the Patriots continue to cruise to a win and retake command of the No. 1 seed in the AFC? As the second half unfolds, check out our live blog of Monday’s matchup, where you can find expert analysis and real-time highlights.
