Kevin Durant Reportedly Has ‘No Desire’ to Play for Timberwolves amid NBA Trade Rumors

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant isn’t interested in the Minnesota Timberwolves as a future trade destination, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

“I’m told Durant has no desire to be in Minnesota with the Timberwolves,” Charania reported during a Monday appearance on SportsCenter.

Charania previously reported that the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs were Durant’s “preferred” trade locations and he’d be willing to make a “long-term” commitment to all three teams.

That may not prevent the Timberwolves from possibly acquiring the 15-time All-Star, though.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported Monday that Minnesota has been the “most aggressive” team in the mix for Durant.

Per Charania, the Suns have also “made clear” to opposing front offices that they’re willing to find the best deal available “even if it means trading Durant to a team outside his preferred list.”

Still, it could be risky for Minnesota to heavily pursue the two-time champion with just one year and $54.7 million remaining on his contract. On July 6, Durant is eligible to receive a two-year extension worth as much as $122 million.

If he’s traded to a team that he reportedly wasn’t interested in joining, his willingness to sign a new deal will likely be impacted.

While the Suns struggled throughout the 2024-25 season and ultimately missed the playoffs with a 36-46 record, the 36-year-old still showed that he can operate as an elite three-level scorer.

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game on 52.7/43.0/83.9 shooting splits across 62 games.

His potential fit alongside Anthony Edwards in Minnesota is intriguing, especially with the team coming off a second consecutive Western Conference Finals appearance.

The Timberwolves could use a consistent high-volume scorer next to Edwards, who led the team by averaging 27.6 points per game in the regular season. Julius Randle averaged 18.7 points on a nightly basis for Minnesota, but nobody else on the roster was able to record at least 15 points per game.

While the Timberwolves are reportedly targeting Durant, there doesn’t appear to be mutual interest.
