Rory McIlroy once again has a chance to pull off the career grand slam with a 54-hole lead at the Masters.
The Northern Irishman is one of the most successful players in the history of the Masters, but is still in search of his first green jacket. He enters Sunday’s round with a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau, who beat him at the U.S. Open in 2024.

“People, I think, instinctually as human beings we hold back sometimes because of the fear of getting hurt,” McIlroy said before the tournament started. “But I think once you go through that, once you go through those heartbreaks, as I call them, or disappointments, you get to a place where you remember how it feels and you wake up the next day and you’re like, ‘yeah, life goes on, it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be.’”
McIlroy placed himself in prime position for heartbreak – or history – on Sunday, April 13. Following his second-consecutive six-under, 66 on April 12, he spoke with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis about the matchup with DeChambeau.

“For those saying Rory is destined to fail bc of the differences in responses, it’s comparing apples and oranges. Brysons answer is great for Bryson. Rory’s is right for Rory,” one person said.
“Rory is so cooked. He will crumble tomorrow per usual,” predicted another.
“These guys are becoming Tiger vs Phil in majors now. Both very different characters, but fun to watch!” added another.
“I’m not a Rory fan at all, but outside of the three hole debacle on day one he’s playing the best golf of anyone in the tournament,” offered another.
McIlroy and DeChambeau tee off at 2:30 p.m. ET.
