Davis Vs. Roach Fight Card Results

David Whitmire vs. Angel Munoz: This was an action-packed welterweight matchup between two fighters who entered the ring with unbeaten records. However, David Whitmire was the better fighter in all facets of the game.

The 19-year-old Whitmire used his length and jab well throughout the contest. He kept the game Munoz where he wanted him for most of the fight. While his jab was the focus, Whitmire mixed up his attacks well, landing many body shots throughout the six-round scrap. As the fight progressed, Whitmire opened up with combinations and upped his aggression, especially when he stepped in and looked to land to the body with power.

Munoz was a game opponent, and he did sneak some right hooks around Whitmire’s guard at some points. Speaking of his guard, Whitmire could do a better job of keeping his hands up, especially after throwing his own offense. Whitmire is a work in progress and young in his career, but he looked good in his first six-round scrap.

Deric Davis Vs. Jamal Johnson

Deric Davis moved to 6-0 on Saturday, scoring his fifth first-round knockout win. Davis was active from the start of his fight against an overmatched Jamal Johnson. Davis came out throwing with power. He scored with heavy blows, dropping Johnson with an uppercut within the first 90 seconds of the fight. A delay for Johnson to get his mouthpiece cleaned off gave him some time to recover, but not enough. When the bout restarted, Davis got right back into range and returned to throwing big uppercuts that put Johnson back on the canvas. Johnson was able to get back to his feet, but the ref did not allow him to continue.

Dominant does not do Davis’ performance justice.

Davis Vs. Roach Fight Card Preview

Gervonta Davis

Gervonta Davis (30-0 with 28 knockouts) won the IBF junior lightweight title in his 17th pro fight, scoring a seventh-round TKO win over José Pedraza in 2017. He defended that belt with two knockouts before knocking out Jesús Cuellar in the third round in their 2018 bout to capture the WBA super featherweight title. Then, in 2019, the Baltimore-born fighter moved to lightweight to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa for the vacant WBA (regular) lightweight title. Davis won that contest by TKO in the 12th round. Davis then defeated Leo Santa Cruz in 2020 by sixth-round knockout in a scrap that was for the WBA lightweight and WBA super featherweight belts. In December 2021, following a TKO over Mario Barrios in June 2021, Davis faced Isaac Cruz for the WBA lightweight strap. That contest went 12 rounds, with Davis winning via unanimous decision. Davis is 4-0 since the win over Cruz, beating Rolando Romero, Hector Garcia, Ryan Garcia, and most recently Frank Martin via knockout.

Davis and Roach were initially booked to meet in December at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, but that fight was postponed and moved to New York in November. Davis had been in talks to face Vasiliy Lomachenko, but that fight never came to fruition.

ESPN has Davis ranked as the No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer. He is the No. 1 ranked 135-pound fighter.

Lamont Roach Jr.

Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1) sported a 19-0-1 record when he stepped into the ring in November 2019 to face Jamel Herring for the WBO super featherweight title. That contest went the 12-round distance, with Herring retaining his belt. Roach bounced back with four wins after that setback. Then, in November 2023, Roach got the opportunity to fight for the WBA super featherweight belt, meeting Héctor Luis García. Roach won that contest via majority decision. In his most recent outing, the Washington DC-born competitor defeated Feargal McCrory by TKO in front of a hometown crowd to retain that title.

Roach is the No. 5 ranked 130-pounder.

Davis Vs. Roach Breakdown

Davis does an excellent job using his lead hand as a probe. With that hand, he judges distance while also looking to distract his opponent. Then, when Davis has the position he wants, he unloads with a power left. Davis can be countered when he lets his probe hang, but he has the speed and smarts to counter his opponent’s counter. However, that is a risky proposition, and not one a fighter should rely on to score consistently. Davis is also very good at drawing out his opponent with feints. Look for the champ to use level changes to get his opponent to bite on those movements to get information on timing and tendencies so that he can score the head or body with power punches.

When it comes to defense, Davis has remarkable speed. He employs several countering techniques to make his opponents pay for their missed offense.

It’s no secret that the pick in this fight is Davis to win via knockout. He might score that stoppage by catching Roach when he reaches in to score a power punch. Another way Davis might score is that Roach can rush in to close range with little concern for defense.

Roach fights behind a more active jab than Davis, but he uses the lead hand in much the same way. The problem for Roach in this matchup is that he doesn’t possess the power of the lightweight champion. Roach could have success with his jab, especially if he uses it to counter the probes from Davis’s lead hand. Roach needs to be aware of Davis’s feints. His best bet in these moments is to step out of range, but he cannot retreat on a straight line.

Roach’s main power counter is his uppercut. While this technique is extremely effective when it lands when Roach misses, he leaves himself open for a counter. Roach cannot leave his head hanging out there for a power puncher like Davis.

Davis is two inches shorter than Roach. That means Roach will have the chance to catch Davis when he steps into his jabs, which he tends to do because of his size. Roach must be aware of this because Davis doesn’t spend too much time off balance in these situations. In other words, he knows what he is doing in these moments and makes up for his lack of size with defense.
