Kiefer Sutherland arrested and accused of assaulting ride-share driver, L.A. police say

Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested Monday after he was alleged to have physically assaulted and threatened a ride-share driver, police said.

Sutherland, 59, was arrested at Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood after officers responded to a report of an assault around 12:15 a.m., Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes said by email Tuesday.

“The investigation determined that the suspect, later identified as Kiefer Sutherland, entered a rideshare vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats toward the victim,” Terzes said.

The confrontation was verbal, not physical, and unfolded after the driver allegedly repeatedly refused to allow Sutherland to cancel the ride and let him out, according to a source close to the investigation.

Sutherland allegedly told the driver three times to let him out and the driver refused, the source said. When the driver called police, Sutherland stayed at the scene and was cooperative, the source said.

Sutherland’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.

Terzes said the victim didn’t sustain any injuries that required medical treatment at the scene and added that an investigation continued.

Sutherland was booked into jail a little after 4 a.m. on suspicion of making felony criminal threats. He was assigned $50,000 bail and bonded out about seven hours later, the records show. He was scheduled to appear in court Feb. 2.

Sutherland made a mark as a heartthrob, rich kid and sometime bad boy on the big screen in the 1980s before he found a stride on television’s “24” in the 2000s. His father is the late actor Donald Sutherland.
